A seven-year-old girl was found hanging in the bathroom of her house at Pothencode in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

When the girl, who was taking a bath on own, did not come out of the bathroom, her mother went inside and found her daughter hanging from the bathroom grill. A bath towel had been used.

Though the girl was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, she was pronounced brought dead.

The police, however, have not confirmed if the death was an accident or suicide. “We can’t confirm whether it is suicide or an accident. The inquest procedures are going on. We are not in a position to reach any conclusion at present,” Sub Inspector Pothencode Aswin told The News Minute.

The child’s death is the latest in a series of suicides of young girls in Kerala. In February, a minor girl at Murukumpuzha in Thiruvananthapuram had killed herself. The police later found that she had been raped and impregnated by her relative, forcing the 16-year-old girl to take the extreme step.

A 14-year-old girl was found hanged at her house at Walayar in Palakkad in January. In March her younger sister, a nine-year-old was found dead under similar circumstances. The investigation later revealed that both the girls had been subjected to sexual abuse.

In January, a ten-year old was found hanging from her house at Kundara in Kollam. The autopsy revealed that she had been raped. Her grandfather is the prime accused in the case. The police had also arrested her grandmother for concealing her husband’s crime.
