The first single from Rajinikanth's Kaala released on Tuesday. Titled 'Semma Weightu', the song has been launched on May Day, ahead of the audio launch of the film which is scheduled to take place on May 9 in Chennai.

It's not a mere coincidence that the song has released on Labour Day. The teaser of the film, which released on March 2, saw Rajinikanth explaining to Nana Patekar, who plays the antagonist, that the colour black signifies the labour of common people. While Kaala is dressed in black, the antagonist appears in white. In the film, Rajinikanth plays a don in Mumbai, who fights for the rights of oppressed Tamils in his chawl.

'Semma Weightu' has been co-written by Arunraja Kamaraj, who sang the sensational 'Neruppuda' number from Kabali. The other lycricist is Dopeadelicz. Music composer Santosh Narayanan, who'd previously worked on Kabali, announced that the lyrics of 'Semma Weightu' have inputs from social media users. The song has been sung by Hariharasudhan and Santosh Narayanan.

Dhanush of Wunderbar Films, the producer of Kaala, made the announcement about the single release on Monday.

Pa Ranjith's films are always full of political allusions and rich in symbolism. The teaser has already set up expectations from fans about the content of Kaala. The song, 'Semma Weightu', celebrates the power of the working class, the unity present in Dharavi, their home. It also addresses Rajinikanth as 'Kaala Saetu' and has visuals from the film. The lyrics also have lines from Hindi. Lines like "Odhuka nenacha, verati adipom" which speak out against oppression make it clear that Kaala will be politically loaded and speak from the point of view of the oppressed.

'Semma Weightu' is called 'Yama Greatu' and 'Bahut Bhaari Hai' in Telugu and Hindi respectively.
