The team of 2009 critically-acclaimed Tamil film Naadodigal, directed by Samuthirakani, has reunited for the second part in the franchise. The film, which stars Sasikumar, Anjali and Atulya Ravi, went on the floors on Friday and will be predominantly shot in and around Madurai. It has been confirmed that the film won’t be a sequel or bear any connection with the first part. “They’re merely exploring the similar theme of the first part. It’s neither a sequel nor a continuation of Naadodigal. They decided to call it Naadodigal 2 because of the popularity of the first part,” a source said.

After making a splash with Appa and Thondan recently, national award-winning actor Samuthirakani hopes to make a strong comeback to direction with this project. Apparently, Kani has been toying with the idea of making Naadodigal 2 for a while now and it was at the behest of Sasikumar that he took up the idea seriously and finished the script a few months ago. The project will be wrapped up in 45 days and Samuthirakani is hopeful of bringing it to theatres in March or April.

The first part was produced by S Michael Rayappan under the banner, Global Entertainer, and enjoyed a successful run at the box office. Made on a budget of 7 crores the film grossed more than 35 crores and was among the huge blockbusters of 2009.

The plot focuses on a trio who attempt to unite their friend with his lover against the wishes of the families involved, and at heavy cost to themselves, only to realise that the lovers separate after a short while.

Part 2 is being bankrolled by Nandagopal of Madras Enterprises.  Bharani and Namo Narayanan, who featured in the original, have been cast in vital roles. Other supporting cast members include Thulasi, MS Bhaskar, Sree Ranjani and Super Subbarayan. The technical crew includes Justin Prabhakaran as music director, Ekambaram handling the camera, Jackie the art direction, Ramesh the editing and Dileep Subbarayan the stunts.
