Sanal Kumar case accused DySP Harikumar's suicide note retrieved

Harikumar was found hanging in his house in Kallambalam near Varkala on Tuesday, 9 days after he absconded following Sanal Kumar’s death.

The suicide note of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) B Harikumar, the prime accused in the Sanal Kumar murder case in Neyyatinkkara, was retrieved by the Thiruvananthapuram crime branch on Wednesday.

“He had just written three lines asking his wife and son to take care of each other. He had not mentioned anything about the Sanal Kumar case,” Attingal DySP Anil Kumar, who is in charge of investigating Harikumar’s suicide told TNM.

Harikumar, who was the DySP of Neyyattinkara, was found hanging from his house in Kallambalam near Varkala on Tuesday morning. He was found nine days after he went on the run following Sanal Kumar’s death on November 5. On Tuesday night, K Binu, a friend of Harikumar who is alleged to have helped him escape from the spot of the accident, surrendered before the Crime Branch (CB), IG Sreejith, who is investigating the case, confirmed.

Ramesh, who drove Harikumar and Binu, also surrendered before the police. Ramesh is reportedly the driver of Satish, the owner of a lodge in Thirparappu in Tamil Nadu. Satish had been arrested by the Kerala police on Saturday for helping the two evade arrest. Binu’s son Anup was also taken into custody on Saturday.

Harikumar is survived by his wife and a son, who both live in their house in Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram. His family had been questioned earlier this week by the crime branch officers regarding the whereabouts of Harikumar following Sanal Kumar’s death.

On November 5, the DySP and Sanal Kumar (32), an electrician in Kodungavila were engaged in an argument over Sanal’s car parked in front of the officer’s car. The argument soon took a deadly turn with the DySP allegedly pushing Sanal on to the road, where an approaching car mowed him down.

According to Manorama, the Crime Branch officials are of the opinion that Binu, Harikumar’s accomplice, might know the reason for him committing suicide and this is what police sources have been suspecting ever since his death.

Harikumar’s death has sparked protests among residents of Kondugavila, where Sanal’s death occurred. The protestors in Kodingavila, who formed the Sanal Kumar Action Council seeking justice for the 32-year-old, have also demanded an inquiry against DGP Loknath Behera for allegedly ignoring various cases that were registered against DySP Harikumar in the past.
