On the run for 2 weeks, TRS MP D Srinivas’ son arrested for sexual harassment

D Sanjay has been accused of sexually harassing students of Shaankary Nursing College.

After evading arrest for nearly two weeks, TRS Rajya Sabha MP D Srinivas' son D Sanjay was arrested by the police on Sunday. Sanjay, who is the former Mayor of Nizamabad, is accused of sexually harassing students of his college—Shaankary Nursing College.

On August 3, a case under several sections including Nirbhaya Act and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act was registered against him after 11 students approached the Home Minister, N Narasimha Reddy, and the local police.

According to reports, the accused had been harassing the girls and seeking sexual favours. The girls alleged that Sanjay summoned them to his room, asked them to remove their clothes and made sexual advances. The victims shared their ordeal  with their parents. Later, the girls and their parents approached the Progressive Organisation for Women—an NGO working towards women rights.

With the help of the activists, they met the Home Minister and also registered a case with the local police.

Subsequently, the Home Minister directed the DGP to take prompt action against the accused. However, Sanjay soon applied for anticipatory bail and went absconding after it was rejected by the High Court.

The court then ordered Nizamabad police to display a notice at his home asking him to appear before them before August 12.

The accused on Sunday along with his lawyer went to the Assistant Commissioner’s office and surrendered.

After inquiry, police arrested him. The local court has remanded him to two-week judicial custody, according to the Hindustan Times.

Two months ago, Nizamabad MP K Kavitha had sought disciplinary action against Srinivas and demanded for him to be sacked from the party alleging anti-party activities.
