A 22-year-old man slashed his neighbour with a blade on Sunday night in Guindy after she rejected his marriage proposal. Police arrested the man and charged him with attempt to murder and stalking.
The 18-year-old college student was severely injured in the incident and is going through treatment for injuries on her hands and face. Doctors have stated that her condition is stable.
The investigating officer told The Times of India that on Sunday evening, the girl had scolded Rohith in front of his friends, following which he felt insulted and waited outside her house to attack her.
According to bystanders, he was reeking of liquor, the officer added.
Both Rohith and the girl were on good terms till he proposed marriage. She rejected the proposal stating that he did not have a job, said the investigating officer.
He later visited her house and asked her parents to allow him to marry her. They also rejected the marriage proposal and asked him to leave their daughter alone.
But, he would follow her every day when she was going to college and on her way back.
She had informed her parents that she was being repeatedly stalked by Rohith and they had warned him that they will file a police complaint but he didnâ€™t mend his ways, reported ToI.
This is not the first such instance where a girl has been attacked by a stalker in Chennai in the recent past.
In August, a 21-year-old girl was stabbed by her neighbour in T Nagar for refusing to marry him. The girl was stalked for a month before being attacked by the man.
It has been more than one year since 24-year-old Swathi was brutally murdered by her stalker at the Nungambakkam railway station in Chennai.
The 22-year-old accused, Ramkumar, allegedly committed suicide by biting a live wire at Puzhal prison.
