Parts of Kerala are witnessing heavy rainfall for the past two days as the rains have gained strength, especially in northern districts of the state, after a brief lull. Warnings have been issued after the Indian Meteorological Department predicted extremely heavy rainfall in some districts.

A red warning, which states that necessary action be taken by the district authorities, has been issued in Idukki, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts for Thursday as extremely heavy rainfall, more than 204 mm rainfall in 24 hours, is predicted.

An Orange warning, which asks the district to be ‘prepared’, has been issued to Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Palakkad and Thrissur districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in these regions.

Educational institutions located in six districts – Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad and Idukki – in the state have declared a holiday on Thursday owing to heavy rains. However, there will not be any changes in dates of the public exams scheduled to be conducted on Thursday. Holidays have also been declared in the educational institutions located at Attappadi in Palakkad districts and Kanjirappally and Meenachil taluks of Kottayam districts.

As the water level of river Periyar is increasing, the shutters of Pambla, Kallarkutti and Malankara dams have been opened. A warning has been issued to people living in the downstream areas of the Periyar river.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued an emergency helpline ‘1077’ for people in the state. KSDMA has also issued prohibitory warnings, especially for children in case holidays are declared, that no one should venture into water bodies in the coming days.

The IMD has also issued thunderstorm warnings in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Fishermen have also been warned not to venture into the sea till Friday, as high waves have been forecast.
