Superstar Rajinikanth’s Petta, directed by Karthik Subburaj which marks his first-time collaboration with Rajinikanth, has cleared the CBFC with UA certificate and the film is gearing up for a grand release for Pongal 2019.

After having simultaneous releases in Telugu with Kabali, Kaala and 2.0, Rajinikanth's Petta might not have a simultaneous Telugu release. “It’s very unlikely for Petta and Viswasam to release in Telugu as theatre owners in Telugu states will give first preference to the three big Telugu releases. Even if Petta and Viswasam manage to have a release amid the tough competition, it’ll be extremely difficult to find screens,” a source in the trade said.

Bankrolled by Sun Pictures Kalanithi Maran, the film has Vijay Sethupathi playing an important role and this is the first time he is sharing the screen space with Rajinikanth. In the star cast of this film are Sasikumar, Simran, Trisha, Malavika Mohanan, Megha Akash, Bobby Simha and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi will be sharing screen space with Rajinikanth for the first time and Sethupathi will be playing the main antagonist who goes by the name Jithu. Sasi Kumar will be playing the role Maalik and this character will feature as Rajini's friend and will appear in the flashback scenes of the film.

Anirudh Ravichander is composing the tunes for this gangster actioner with Tirru cranking the camera and Vivek Harshan being in charge of the editing. The rest of the technical crew include Peter Hein from stunt choreography, Suresh Selvarajan for production designing, Kunal Rajan as a sound designer, Niharika Khan and Praveen Raja as costume designers, and Baba Bhaskar and Sheriff for dance choreography.
