Months before the Lok Sabha elections in India, the Congress on Wednesday appointed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect from the first week of February 2019, according to a statement released by the Congress. This marks Priyanka’s official entry into active politics.

Media reports had earlier speculated that Priyanka will be contesting the general elections from her mother and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s constituency, Rae Bareli. Priyanka will also be managing the party's campaign for the Varanasi seat, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to contest the Lok Sabha Elections from. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has been appointed the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh West with immediate effect.

“Honourable Congress President has appointed Shrimati Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on first week of February 2019,” the statement released by Congress stated.

Rahul Gandhi also appointed Shri KC Venugopal, who is also the General Secretary in Karnataka, as AICC General Secretary (organisation) with immediate effect. Senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh, has been appointed as the General Secretary for Haryana with immediate effect.

The Congress announced the news on its official Twitter handle, adding, “We're fired up & ready to go!”

During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Priyanka worked behind the scenes for the Congress’ election campaign. She was her mother Sonia Gandhi’s campaign manager and also helped supervise her brother Rahul Gandhi’s campaign. During the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections, Priyanka Gandhi had managed the party’s statewide campaign and had played a major role in quelling infighting among the party members over the allocation of tickets.

Priyanka Gandhi, who is the daughter of Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi, is married to businessman Robert Vadra.
