PM Narendra Modi, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Google CEO Sundar Pichai are among over 50 global personalities nominated for the Time Person of the Year award.

Former Gujarat CM Narendra Modi swept to power in 2014 elections to head the world’s largest democracy on the back of an overwhelming mandate.

Time said Modi has “encouraged foreign direct investment in India and is trying to modernise the world’s largest democracy. He has also faced controversy over what some see as right-wing extremism”.

Mukesh Ambani is chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd. and is currently the richest Indian.

On Ambani, Time said, “The chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd which owns everything from telecom properties to the world’s largest crude oil refinery”.

India-born Sundar Pichai became CEO of Google in August this year.

“After 11 years at Google, most recently as co-founder Larry Page’s right hand, Pichai assumed the tech giant’s top job. Amid a wave of change, he will oversee core businesses including serach, ads, Android and YouTube,” Time said about Sundar Pichai.

The prestigious Time magazine has named a ‘Person of the Year’ for the last nine decades. Past recipients of the coveted title include Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King among others.
