Director Ram’s Peranbu premiered at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) earlier this year and received positive response. It was then screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival to extremely good response which has made its release in India highly anticipated. The film, starring Mammootty in the lead, was recently screened at the 49th International Film Festival of India in Goa and was highly appreciated by the delegates.

Speaking about the film and how Mammootty came on board, director Ram said, “The script was completed in 2009. When I thought who should be chosen as Amudan, only a single face came to my mind and it was Mammootty. I have seen many Malayalam movies. Mammookka’s Amaram, Thaniyavarthanam and Mrigaya are all my favourite movies. I was also impressed by Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha. MT Vasudevan Nair’s films and writings have influenced me. I would have withdrawn this project if Mammootty refused to do it.”

On the response he received for Peranbu, Ram said,” I have received best responses from the audience. Some complained of not being able to see it. Some said that the movie made them weep. The foreign audience also liked the movie when it was screened in Rotterdam and Shanghai festivals.”

Mammootty plays a family man – the father of a girl – who ‘rediscovers himself’, according to Ram. The film has also been written by him. The cast of Peranbu also includes Anjali, Samuthirakani, Vadivukkarasi, Sadhana, Livingston, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Siddique and Aruldoss. Anjali, a transsexual woman from Kerala, is also playing a pivotal role in the film.

Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed music for this film with Theni Eswar wielding the camera and Suriya Pradhaman editing. The film is bankrolled by PL Thenappan under his banner Sri Rajalakshmi Films. Peranbu is a bilingual that will be released in Tamil and Malayalam simultaneously.
