The Vijay Sethupathi-Trisha starrer 96 was undoubtedly one of the hit movies in Kollywood last year. The film successfully completed 100 days and the milestone was recently celebrated with a grand success meet event in Chennai. Actor-filmmaker R Parthiban hosted the show, with film personalities such as Cheran and Samuthirakani gracing the event.

While hosting, Parthiban mentioned that he wanted to give a gift to 96 fans as many of them were disappointed that the lead pair Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha did not hug each other in the film till the end. He called the stars over to the stage requesting them to hug so that their fans would be pleased. Of course, the stars obliged to applause from the gathering.

96 is a C Prem Kumar directorial, which was bankrolled by Nandagopal under the Madras Enterprises banner. The star cast also included Varsha Bollamma, Aadithya Baaskar, Gouri G Kishan, Devadarshini, Janagaraj and Bagavathi Perumal in supporting roles. It may be noted here that director Prem Kumar was the cinematographer for Vijay Sethupathi’s hit movie Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kanom and 96 was his debut directorial venture. The film had music composed by Govind Menon with N Shanmuga Sundaram cranking the camera and Govindraj in charge of the editing.

The film’s hit status has paved way for its remake in Telugu. The rights were bought by popular Tollywood producer Dil Raj and a search was on for a suitable hero to reprise the role done by Vijay Sethupathi. Last week, it was officially announced that Sharwanand and Samantha Akkineni will play the leads in the Telugu version of the film, to be directed again by Prem Kumar.

96 is currently being remade in Kannada with the title 99. The film has Ganesh and Bhavana playing the lead pair with Preetham Gubbi directing it.
