Panchayat in Kerala to serve memo to Pepsi to stop use of groundwater in view of drought

The panchayat alleged that the soft drink multinational company was drawing lakhs of litres of water every day.

Soft drink giant PepsiCo's plant in Puthussery near Palakkad will be served a memo by the village panchayat to stop drawing groundwater, in view of severe drought-like situation and drinking water scarcity in the district.

The Puthussery village panchayat's administrative committee during its meeting on Monday decided in principle to serve the stop memo, panchayat sources said. It also decided to carry out a detailed study on the issue and present a resolution in this regard at the next committee meeting to be held on May 10, the sources said.

The panchayat alleged that the soft drink multinational company was drawing lakhs of litres of water every day even though drought-like situation prevailed in the district, which has since the past few days recorded above 40 degree Celsius temperature, the highest in the state.
