Opposition against TASMAC shops bubbles into violent protests in Tamil Nadu

The police resorted to brute force to handle the protest; pulling members of the crowd by their hair

Clamouring for a lock-down on the liquor-selling TASMAC shops across the state, various human rights groups and womens’ groups took to the streets in different districts on Thursday. The protests soon turned violent, leading to police intervention, reported Sun News.

In Chennai’s Nolambur area, a woman sustained grievous injuries as police forces tried to clampdown on the protests. Similarly, in Maduravoyal, women’s groups and children have been severely protesting against the liquor outfits, resulting in a violent run-in with the police.  The police resorted to brute force to handle the protest; pulling members of the crowd by their hair. They were then dragged to the police van and locked in. Elsewhere, a small boy in the crowd reportedly fainted due to the sheer force of the police upon him.

Several members of the public have condemned the brutal way in which the police handled the crowd.
