The tragic death of a 17-year-old transgender youth in December last year has prompted US President Barack Obama to come out and condemn “repairing” therapies aimed at gay, lesbian and transgender youth.

A report by the New York Times mentions that the suicide of the youth named Leelah Alcorn who wrote a note before jumping in front of a tractor-trailer to her death moved Obama to condemn such practices. Obama has been steadfast in his support of gay-rights after opposing same-sex marriages early on in his political career.

A petition was also started in the teenager’s name which has already close to 1,20,000 signatures in three months.

“We share your concern about its potentially devastating effects on the lives of transgender as well as gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youth”, said the statement, written by Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Obama.

The statement also added that the administration was fully in support of protecting the youth of the country and backed “efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors”.
