Amma is back, and so is Brand Amma.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has selected three locations for Amma weekly market in the city. The market will be set up in a strip of land near Mint flyover, Arumbakkam and Kotturpuram. The concept of Amma markets was first announced in August 2014.

The Amma weeky markets will sell 650 products which are seen as everyday requirements, and about 200 shops will be set-up, according to media reports.

Sources told Times of India that the mayor Saidai S Duraisamy wanted to implement as many as possible projects before his term ends. An official told TOI, “There has been a fillip from the Mayor's office post the state assembly election. He instructed us to push through with Amma brand projects.”

Officials said that the date of launch of markets cannot be announced as they have coordinate with at least 10 other departments before they have a proper plan.

The market is mainly for promoting feature products manufactured by government aided and self-help groups across Tamil Nadu. This market is to provide a platform for small manufacturers to showcase their products. There won’t be any middlemen involved in the process.

However, the Chennai corporation officials are also planning on bringing Amma theatres, but the project is facing road-blocks.
