A day after AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa expelled senior leader and Harbour constituency MLA Pala Karuppiah from the party for "going against" its principles, the legislator has resigned from the assembly.

Announcing this at a media conference in Chennai, Pala Karuppiah said that AIADMK members did not have any space to express their views. He added that even in Executive Committee and General body meetings, only one view emerged, that of Jayalalithaa’s.

Pala Karuppiah was sacked from the party following his criticism of party colleagues and ministers.

During the media conference however, Pala Karuppiah made it clear that he had no intention of issuing an apology to the AIADMK leadership. Instead, he criticized the party for stifling freedom of speech.

“No discussion happens, multiple views are never existent. Party cadres only work for promoting Jayalalithaa by placing banners and posing for pictures for welfare schemes,” he said.

He also alleged that bureaucrats had joined hands with the ruling class, which according to him was a bad sign, and corruption was increasing. “There is chaos due to corruption. I have written multiple letters to Jayalalithaa but I haven't got any response,” he said.

On his resignation as an MLA, Pala Karuppiah said, “I wanted to give resignation letter to the Assembly Speaker, but he is not in town. The Assembly secretary is yet to accept my resignation letter.”

Pala Karuppiah said that he had completely failed as an MLA, as his hands were tied and could not work for the people. “I wasn’t able to work for people; I have been defeated while trying to play the MLA’s role. In my constituency, there is an Urdu school which mostly has Muslim students but an AIADMK Party man is using the school ground for his own purpose...I can't even say anything against it,” he said.

Criticizing the TN government’s decision to not introduce prohibition he said, “(It is like) the government takes money from poor people (for alcohol) with the left hand by selling them liquor and giving it back in the name of freebies with their right hand. The government should try to implement prohibition. Getting one third of all revenue from liquor is not a good thing.”
