The News Minute | July 5, 2014 | 12.11 pm ISTThe Vice Chancellor of Calicut University has all but put up a sign board on his office door saying "No entry for women". Calicut University Vice Chancellor Dr Abdul Salam has made it very difficult for the female students of the university to visit him. Reason? The VC fears that a plot is on to malign him and throw him out of office by accusing him of sexually harassing “female” students. The VC says that there have been plots in the past as well, to kick him out of office, and since that did not work out, his enemies are trying to entangle him in a case of sexual abuse by using girl students like “suicide bombers”. In an order dated June 28, the VC officially stated that female visitors to his chamber should be restricted as far as possible. However, this is not going down well with the girl students, teachers and even the non-teaching staff of the university. Teachers have complained against the order to the National Commission for Women and to the Governor of Kerala, Sheila Dixit, who is also the Chancellor of the varsity. The women staff and students say that the order is heavily biased in terms of gender and also implies a low opinion of women in general.Reports suggest that it all started when the Deputy Vice Chancellor in a note to the VC on June 26 reportedly held that according to his “reliable sources” women are being trained to do “goonda like” activities with the help of women’s groups. A few cases have already been filed against the VC in the Women’s Commission, the Deputy VC said in his note. The teachers and the faculty are in a fix as almost 80 percent of the students and teachers are women.Abdul Salam has been facing heat for two years now from the Left and students groups, who are demanding for his resignation.
