‘No alternative but to rebuild Palarivattom flyover’: Kerala govt tells HC

Responding to a question of the Kerala High Court on the reconstruction of Palarivattom flyover, the state government on Monday told the court that there is no option other than to rebuild the structure based on Metroman E Sreedharan’s recommendation.

The High Court had earlier asked the government not to start the demolition of the flyover for reconstruction, and to submit a report by checking the possibilities of doing a load test.

The response filed by the government stated that the repair will cost Rs 7.13 crore without any guarantee on lifespan. Hence, the recommendation of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) principle advisor E Sreedharan to reconstruct a major portion of the flyover with an assurance of 100 years lifespan was the only alternative, the government stated, as per a Times of India report.

According to Mathrubhumi, the report submitted by the government also states that there are 2,183 cracks on the flyover and six deflections. Out of the total cracks, 99 are having a depth of more than three centimetres and they will further increase if heavy vehicles pass through the flyover, the government stated.

The Kerala government has already given charge of reconstruction of the flyover to DMRC.

The report which was submitted to the court was prepared by various agencies appointed by Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB). In yet another development in the Vigilance probe that is going on in the scam, the High Court on Monday granted bail to three arrested persons.

Public Works Department former secretary TO Soorej; managing director of construction company RDS Projects Ltd, Sumeet Goyal; former assistant general manager of Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala Ltd. MT Thankachan, were granted bail by the court. Another accused was granted bail earlier.

The Palarivattom flyover was shut down in May 2019, two years after it was inaugurated and opened to traffic, due to severe structural damages. The closure of the multi-crore flyover has triggered a huge controversy in the state.
