The News Minute | January 30, 2015 | 06.20 Pm IST | Updated January 31, 2015 08:30 am IST  Nine persons have been reconverted in a ‘ghar wapsi’ ceremony to Hinduism from Christianity in a ceremony conducted by Hindu Makkal Katchi(HMK) in Chennai. According to State General Secretary of Hindu Makkal Katchi Rama Ravikumar who spoke to The News Minute 108 people were initially supposed to reconvert, a plan which was made difficult because of the police, he alleged.  Ravikumar also said that police had detained HMK's state president Ajay Sampath in Anna Nagar preventing him from being a part of the ceremony.  The nine, including three couples were sprinkled with Ganga water, turmeric tinged rice after prayers led by Ravikumar , reported PTI. According to Deivanayagi and her husband Sekar who became Christians 17 years ago , their local Church had allegedly promised them houses if they converted. Another other couple Annakili and Rajendran were Christians from a decade back. The other three were Jamuna, Nagamma and Mouli Velu. According to Jamuna, she was promised a "bountiful life with no worries," if she chose to convert. "I have kids and I am a labourer..I saw no change in life after I converted..also Church demanded money for several purposes and I could not give.” Claiming that persuasion was also one of the reasons chosen by them to choose Christianity, they said that they had decided to return "voluntarily", according to the report.  Ravikumar also said that the HMK had planned to reconvert atleast one lakh persons to Hinduism by 2017. Similar events have been planned to be held in Tiruvallur and Kodaikanal in the coming months, reported New Indian Express.  Tweet Follow @thenewsminute
