[NBA]: Why the San Antonio Spurs are plain scary

By Ronny JacobApril 10, 2015| 3.20 pm ISTThe time of the NBA season when a team plays their best basketball together, or when they ‘peak’, has a huge bearing on how far they would go in pursuit of their championship dreams.The San Antonio Spurs, reigning champions of the NBA have had the knack of timing just right, season after season. For the third year in a row, it seems like they could make a push  all the way to the Finals and perhaps, win it all. The Spurs have a playoff spot locked in and  are sitting pretty as the 6th seed. But as always, the final spots for the playoffs in the West  tend to be decided only after all 81 games have been played, and the Spurs could very well  see themselves advancing a spot or two at the very least.They’re on a nine-game winning streak and their 107-92 demolition of the top-seeded and Western Conference Winners Golden State Warriors should make it clear that they do intend to put up quite a solid title defence. Kawhi Leonard, last year’s Finals MVP scored his career  high on the way to leading the Spurs to the win, helped on by Tim Duncan’s 19 and Danny  Green’s 18 points. Guards Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili have had a rather forgettable  season so far, but Head Coach Gregg Popovich has surely been saving them for the playoffs  where we could be seeing some serious action from both of them. In fact, Tony Parker’s 27  points today in their win against Houston has somewhat redeemed his lack-lusture  performance and a string of single-digit-scoring games.Spurs Facebook pageThe Golden State Warriors, led by MVP candidate Stephen Curry are surely the favourites to win the Championship this season, and it can safely be assumed that the team that wins the  West will win it all. That being said, they somehow lack one key ingredient – the agony of  having lost really big games and the fire that comes with it. Most teams that have won the  championship; be it Jordan’s Bulls, Isaiah’s Pistons or more recently, LeBron’s Heat and the  Spurs last year, came back from bitter, hard losses the previous year and drove themselves to  win it all. Losing seems to give NBA teams the kind of maturity that they require to pull it off  during important moments deep in the 4th quarter of a knockout game when the odds are  stacked against them.Do the Warriors have this kind of maturity now? It seems unlikely that  they could make a push all the way to the Finals this time around, although the future sure  seems theirs for the taking. This resurgence by the Spurs could throw a spanner into the  championship dreams of teams like the Warriors and if you were to put a gun to my head  though, I’d put my money on the Spurs!Basketball fans have an amazing April and May lined up for them, with the first round of the Western Conference sure to produce some interesting matchups, an amazing display of  talent and good, proper basketball.Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this articles are the personal opinions of the author.
