Lady Superstar Nayanthara is all set to start working on her 65th film that has been titled Netrikann. Quite interestingly, this title is borrowed from Superstar Rajinikanth’s acclaimed 1981 drama of the same name (Netrikkan).

The official announcement about Netrikann was made on Sunday by director Vignesh Shivn. This film will be directed by Milind Rau, who previously made Aval, and will be produced by Vignesh Shivn’s Rowdy Baby Pictures.

The film’s shoot is set to begin today announces the title poster. This poster offers quite a few clues on what the film might be on. There are braille patterns on the poster that’s splattered with blood near the edges. A hand traces the title and the poster also has BDSM toys on it.

Netrikkan (1981) produced by K Balachanderand directed by SP Muthuraman won Rajinikanth critical acclaim for his performance. The actor played dual roles, father and son, in this film where his father character was a womaniser, wife beater, among other things.

The word ‘netrikann,’ which means the ‘eye on the forehead’ or the ‘third eye,’ also has another popular reference both to Sangam literature and a 1965 film starring Shivaji Ganeshan and Nagesh (Thiruvilayadal).

According to mythology, poet Nakkeerar and another poet, who is god Shiva in disguise, have an argument about a poem authored by the latter. When Nakkeerar points out a mistake, Shiva is angered by the criticism, reveals himself and his third eye, while an unruffled Nakkeerar says “Netrikkan thirappinum kuttram kuttrame” which translates to “even if you open your third eye, mistake is a mistake”.

This dialogue gained popularity when AP Nagarajan (who played Nakkeerar’s part) and Shivaji (who played lord Shiva) presented it on screen in the movie Thiruvilayadal.

Nayanthara, who awaits the release of Bigil and Syee Raa Narasimha Reddy, also has Rajinikanth’s Darbar in the making.
