While rumours have been doing the rounds that director AR Murugadoss’s next would be a political drama with Rajinikanth in the lead titled Naarkkaali, the director himself took to Twitter to dispel them on Wednesday.

“Naarkkaali” is not the title of my next project, pls stop spreading rumors (sic),” reads his tweet that was posted on January 16 from his official handle.

Soon after Murugadoss completed Vijay’s Sarkar rumours on his next began circulating. The director, too, confirmed this news in an interview in which he was quoted saying, “I have already narrated the script to Thalaivar and has even got his nod. After his two films, Kaala and 2.0, hit the screens, my project will start.”

It was later reported that cinematographer Santosh Sivan, who had worked with AR Murugadoss in Thuppaki and Spyder may be cranking the camera for the Rajini starrer.

Santosh Sivan was the cinematographer for Rajinikanth in Thalapathi way back in 1991 and has not gotten an opportunity to work with the Superstar since then.

Murugadoss’s Sarkar ran into trouble with the TN state government following which a few scenes that were deemed controversial were removed. Scenes involving the government’s freebie schemes were regarded offensively by the AIADMK-led TN state government.

Murugadoss also had to deal with plagiarism charges that were levelled on him right before the film’s release. Writer and Assistant Director Varun Rajendran had claimed that the film’s story was based on his registered script. Following a court case, Sarkar team came forward to acknowledge the writer’s contribution in the film’s opening credits.

Rajinikanth whose latest release is Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta is yet to make official announcements on his next project. Petta is a multi-starrer and was a first-time collaboration between many of the artists. It had Trisha, Simran, Vijay Sethupathy, Bobby Simha and many others. Petta released alongside Ajith’s Viswasam for Pongal 2019 and has received a great response from audiences so far.
