A first year M Tech student from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kozhikode was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room on Saturday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Arun Krishna, who was pursuing a course in nano-technology.

The 24-year old is a native of Malayinkil in Thiruvananthapuram, and it had only been three months since he joined the course at NIT.

According to a report in Mathrubhumi daily, Arun had spent time with his friends till 7:30 pm on Friday night. He was alone at his hostel room as his roommate had gone home.

On Saturday morning, his classmates tried calling him, but his phone was switched off. There was no response to repeated knocks on the door either.

Following this, the security staff of the hostel forced the door open, and he was found hanging inside.

The Kunnamangalam police said that prima facie it was a case of suicide.

“An inquest on the body is being conducted at the Kozhikode Medical College. The hostel room has been sealed. So far, we haven’t got any information from his friends that he was upset or had any issues. We will go the hostel after the post-mortem and other procedures are over, to conduct further enquiry. His parents have arrived,” the police told TNM.

There was a convocation ceremony at NIT on Saturday and most of the students had gone to attend the event.

Arun Krishna had joined NIT after taking a leave from his job. He was working in a firm outside Kerala.

According to reports, he was a good student, and he used to teach other students at NIT.

This is the second suicide reported from the NIT hostel in the past three months. In July, a B Tech student from Andhra Pradesh had committed suicide at the hostel room.
