Several months ago, there was an announcement that the Malayalam film industry’s highest budget movie based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s novel Randamoozham is on the cards. It was announced that NRI businessman BR Shetty will be producing the film under his banner on a budget of Rs 1,000 crores, making it not only the most expensive film in the history of Malayalam cinema but in Indian cinema as well.

While the announcement was made about the project, there was no clear indication about when it would commence. Well, we have now got clarity from the producer itself about it. According to a tweet from BR Shetty, the film will go on the floors from July 2019 onwards.

Randamoozham is a Malayalam novel penned by author MT Vasudevan Nair in 1984. The story is based on the epic Mahabharata and is told from Bhima’s perspective. Appreciated and credited as a masterpiece, it won the Vayalar Award for the best literary work in Malayalam in 1985 and the Muttathu Varkey Award in 1994.

The producer also tweeted that he had met the director VA Shri Kumar Menon in New Delhi and discussed the project with him. Incidentally, Shri Kumar Menon and Mohanlal are currently busy with their upcoming film Odiyan. The film is scheduled for release on October 10 and the post-production work is happening right now.

Initially, director Hariharan was onboard to direct Randamoozham but later the offer went to VA Shri Kumar Menon. Being a high budget movie, there are plans to release it in two parts, with the first part scheduled for release in 2020.

Apart from Odiyan, Mohanlal has a number of films lined up for release. Most prominent among these is Prithviraj’s debut directorial Lucifer. Interestingly, Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi will make his debut in the Malayalam film industry with this film. Apart from that, veteran filmmaker Fazil has reportedly been roped in to play an important role in the film.
