The historical extravaganza, Marakkar - Arabikadalinte Simham, went on the floors on December 1st, confirmed its director Priyadarshan. Confirming the news and sharing a few pictures of the muhurat, he wrote, "KUNJALI MARAKKAR" - Marakkar - Arabikadalinte Simham starts rolling today. #Mohanlal #Priyadarshan #SabuCyril #Thiru Produced by Antony Perumbavoor #AashirvadCinemas Co-Produced by Santhosh T Kuruvilla Dr-Roy CJ.”

Made on a budget of Rs 100 crore, the film is being bankrolled by Antony Perumbavoor under his banner Ashirvad Films in association with Santhosh T Kuruvilla and Roy CJ.

Mohanlal will be seen playing the title role in this film and will have his son Pranav making a cameo appearance. If reports are to be believed, Pranav would be seen playing the younger version of Marakkar. Further, Priyadarshan’s daughter Kalyani, who made her acting debut in a Tollywood film, will be seen doing a role in the film and it will mark her debut in the Malayalam film industry.

The film also has Prabhu, Suneil Shetty, Manju Warrier, Arjun Sarja, Mukesh and Keerthy Suresh in pivotal roles. Interestingly, Mohanlal and Prabhu shared screen space in the 1996 release Kaalapani / Siraichaalai, which was also directed by Priyadarshan.

Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham is based on the true life of Kunjali Marakkar IV. The title ‘Kunjali Marakkar’ was bestowed on naval chiefs during the 16th century and these naval chiefs fought valiantly against the Portuguese army. There were four Kunjali Marakkars during that era, of which the fourth is believed to be the most valiant and popular. The film is based on his life. It will have extensive sea warfare sequences which will be its highlight.

Sabu Cyril has been signed up to take care of the art department and extravagant sets have been erected at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where the shooting commenced. A major portion of the budget has been allotted for the grand sets to be used in the film.

The shooting is expected to be wrapped up in mid- 2019 and the elaborate VFX work that it requires will be ensuring its release in early 2020.
