Complaints have been filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging violation of the Model Code of Conduct multiple times, but the Election Commission of India has given him clearance six times saying that he did not violate the code.

Here are the six instances —

  1. On April 1, at a rally in Wardha in Maharashtra, the Prime Minister took a veiled jibe at Congress president Rahul Gandhi. “Leaders of that party are now scared of contesting from constituencies dominated by the majority (Hindu) population… It is evident from the fact that one has to contest a seat where the minority is majority,” Modi said, according to the complaint filed by the Congress.

  2. On April 9, the Prime Minister invoked the Pulwama bombing and the Balakot air strikes, and asked first-time voters to vote for the BJP in the name of the martyrs. “I want to tell the first-time voters: can your first vote be dedicated to the 'veer jawans',”  and "Can your first vote be dedicated to the 'veer shaheed' (brave martyrs) of Pulwama," Modi had said. A complaint against this had been filed by the CPI(M) with the EC. Modi got his second clean chit from the EC for this.

  3. On April 21, at an election rally in Barmer, Rajasthan, Modi had said that India’s nuclear weapons have not been kept for Diwali.  “India has stopped the policy of getting scared of Pakistan's threats. Every other day they used to say we have nuclear button, we have nuclear button. What do we have then? Have we kept it for Diwali?” he said.

  4. In Nanded, Maharashtra, Modi reportedly referred to the Congress as “a Titanic ship which is sinking. He reportedly said that people on the ship are either sinking or jumping off to escape. Here, he reportedly also said, “the Congress used a microscope to find a seat where the country’s majority is in a minority," in reference to Rahul Gandhi contesting from Wayanad

  5. In Varanasi, according to ANI, Modi said, “In the past five years, no terrorist attacks have taken place. It has shrunk to a few parts of Jammu and Kashmir. In Pulwama, they killed 40 of our jawans. After the attack, around 42 terrorists have been eliminated in Pulwama. This is our working style. For a prosperous India, security is important”.

  6. Modi’s sixth clean chit is for his speech at Patan, Gujarat on April 21, where he had said that his government kept Pakistan on its toes to secure the safe release of IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. "Modi was ready with 12 missiles. It would have been a serious situation so it was good that Pakistan announced to return the Indian pilot else it would have been 'qatal ki raat'," Modi had said.
