In February 2010, Akhil was among nine others who lost their lives in a fire that ravaged the Carlton towers in Bangalore.Akhil’s father Uday Vijayan, a marketing consultant, says there can never be a sense of closure, but his son’s death motivated him to relentlessly work towards creating awareness about fire safety measures.Beyond Carlton, a group that was formed to bring together those affected by the Carlton Towers fire tragedy has now launched a mobile app called ‘Fire Champ’, in collaboration with the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department.The app developed by IChangeMyCity.com and Beyond Carlton, allows people to click pictures of fire safety measures in buildings. “A fire extinguisher that has expired is of no use, it’s like a sitting duck. The app allows one to capture a picture and upload on the server. This then becomes a complaint which the fire safety department will look into,†says Uday.The app also tells people what violations they should be on the lookout for. The app is free to download and available on Google Play on Android and Apple store for Apple devices.“We cannot be fire auditors, but we can be citizens who are aware of what’s right or wrong. It is important to sensitise people, and that is what we want to do with the app,†Uday said.
