In a statement which seemed bizarre, Kerala Minister for Power MM Mani on Monday said that the CPI should maintain political decency.

The usage of the word ‘decency’ from Mani came as a surprise for all, as he is known for his crass and chauvinist remarks against women and political rivals.

“The CPI should maintain political decency that is expected in coalition politics,” Mani told media persons in Kottayam. His statement was a public stand to defend Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who has been flayed by the CPI for the stand he has taken on the Munnar evictions.

Mani was inducted to the cabinet in November last year when EP Jayarajan had to quit owing to nepotism charges.

He is a known Vijayan lieutenant. “The CPI should abstain from joining hands with the foes. We have the responsibility to question if they censure the CM's actions”, Mathrubhumi online quoted him as saying.

Mani also said that that the attitude of the CPI, which is openly criticisng the CM, can’t be accepted. The legislator from Udumbamchola in Idukki has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

On April 22, he said that the leaders of Pembilai Orumai, a collective of tea plantation workers in Munnar, were involved in immoral activities during their protest in 2015 demanding better wages.

This had sparked off a row, with the leaders of Pembilai Orumai staging a protest in Munnar, demanding his resignation.

The CPI and the CPI (M), the largest and second largest parties in the LDF, have been at loggerheads over the Munnar evictions.

Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said that there was a conspiracy behind the demolition of the massive cross at Papathisola during the eviction drive.

CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran, on the other hand, said that the cross belonged to the thief who was hanged along with Jesus Christ, in an apparent reference to the thief from the Bible who was crucified.
