The Nagapattinam district police have launched an investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl from Sirkazhi on Saturday evening. The class 10 student had returned from the local government school around 4.30 pm in the evening.

According to police sources, she would regularly go to the backyard of her residence after her return from school to tend to the cattle. She would usually spend around 15 minutes to complete her chores. However on Saturday, her parents grew concerned when she didn’t return in about half an hour. They immediately went in search of her.

“When they got there they found the girl unconscious. She had injuries on her neck, head and nose. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead,” says the official, adding, “The post-mortem has begun and we are waiting for the report to determine conclusively whether it was rape or even gang rape."

The police are currently investigating multiple angles but did not divulge details of any possible suspects.

“We are talking to other villagers as part of the investigation,” says the official. “The girl was found around 7.30 pm and after the hospital visit the parents came to the station to give a complaint. They have alleged that it is a case of rape. But they haven’t named anyone as a possible suspect yet.”
