India’s largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki India has announced on Friday that it will be proactively recalling 63,493 Petrol Smart Hybrid variants of Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6 models manufactured between January 1, 2019 to November 21, 2019.

Starting December 6, 2019 owners of the suspected vehicles under this recall campaign will be contacted by Maruti Suzuki dealers for inspection and replacement of the faulty part.

The company said in a statement that this is a proactive and voluntary recall. “Recall campaigns are undertaken globally to rectify faults that may be potential safety defects,” the company said in a statement.

Maruti Suzuki will now inspect 63,493 vehicles of petrol SHVS of Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6 for a possible issue with the Motor Generator Unit (MGU). A possible defect may have occurred in the MGU during manufacturing by an overseas global part supplier, the company said in a regulatory filing with the stock exchanges.

“In the interest of its customers, Maruti Suzuki has decided to proactively recall the vehicles for inspection and those found OK will be released immediately,” it said in a statement.

Vehicles requiring replacement of faulty part will be retained for part replacement free of cost. And for customers who will have to send their vehicle back, Maruti Suzuki said that the company’s dealers may make alternate mobility arrangements in such cases, if required.

Customers of suspected vehicles can also visit the Company website marutisuzuki.com under the Important Customer Info tab and fill in the chassis number (MA3 followed by 14 digit alpha-numeric number) on the computer screen to check if their vehicle needs any attention and follow the instructions. The chassis number is embossed on the vehicle ID plate and is also in the vehicle invoice / registration documents.

This comes at a time when the company, along with other automakers in the country have been grappling with low sales due to a slowdown and change in norms.

Maruti Suzuki also announced a price hike starting January 2020 due to increase in various input costs. The price increase will vary for different models.
