The Mohanlal starrer Marakkar: Arabikadlinte Simham is progressing well with the shooting happening at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. A period flick, it has a number of stars in the cast and the latest addition is the Tamil actor Ashok Selvan. Incidentally, it will mark his debut in the Malayalam film industry. Sources in the know say that Ashok Selvan has joined the sets and has begun shooting.

On bagging the offer, the young actor has reportedly told in an interview to the Times of India, “I am very excited and honoured to be part of this project. I play a negative role... something that I have been wanting to try out for a long time. This is my second project with Priyadarshan sir after Sila Samayangalil. It is a historical movie, set in the 1700s, with Mohanlal sir as the lead. I have begun shooting for the film and it’s been fantastic sharing screen space with stalwarts. Prabhu sir, Arjun sir, and Suniel Shetty sir are also part of the film.”

In fact, he is putting on a lot of effort to get into the skin of the character. Sources say that Ashok Selvan is in the process of learning Malayalam so that he could do complete justice to the role. The actor has said that he is picking up the language fast.

Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, made on a budget of Rs 100 crore, will be produced jointly by Antony Perumbavoor, Santhosh T Kuruvilla and CJ Roy under their respective banners Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment. The film is based on the true life of Kunjali Marakkar IV. The title ‘Kunjali Marakkar’ was bestowed on naval chiefs during the 16th century and these naval chiefs fought valiantly against the Portuguese army. There were four Kunjali Marakkars during that era, of which the fourth is the most valiant and popular.
