The Maradu municipal council, which met on Saturday, adjourned without approving the companies which have been selected to demolish the apartment buildings in the municipality.

Councillors of both ruling and opposition fronts refused to discuss the matter raised by sub-collector and municipality secretary Snehil Kumar and stated that approving the companies was not mentioned on the council’s agenda.

Mumbai based Edifice Engineering and Tamil Nadu based Vijay Steels were selected to carry out the demolition of apartments – Golden Kayaloram, H2O Holy Faith, Jains Coral Cove and the twin towers of Alfa Serene —  as ordered by the Supreme Court. The companies, which were earlier shortlisted by an expert team constituted by the government, was finalised after considering the opinion of SB Sarwate, an Indore-based demolition expert.

“The council was not informed beforehand that we should give sanction to the companies to undertake demolition procedures. The special council was called because members demanded that we inform the sub-collector about the concerns raised by the people living in the areas surrounding these buildings which are going to be demolished,” municipality chairperson TH Nadeera told TNM.

She added that council members are displeased over not being informed about the measures taken by the government in the matter.

“We are not being informed about anything. The meetings and discussions are not conducted in the municipality. Even the sub-collector, who is also the secretary of the municipality, did not attend a single council meeting before Saturday. Then why do they require our sanction to hand over the buildings to the companies for demolition? If at all it is necessary, then we have to get a notice requesting it in writing so that there won’t be a problem for the present council in the future,” the chairperson said.

According to the Nadheera, scores of residents who live around the four soon-to-be-demolished apartments have written letters over concerns regarding the damage the demolition could cause to their houses. Therefore, the municipality has decided to conduct awareness classes for the residents in the neighbourhood for three days starting from Sunday.
