The Hindu reported that the body was found to be tied tightly at the hip to the crash guard of the two wheeler using a thin nylon rope when a group of police and rescue service officials tried to retrieve the body, clad in a maroon shirt and black pants, from the lake. It also stated that the body must have been discovered when it floated upwards from the two-wheeler to which it had been tied, after the rope loosened.
After the necessary inquest procedures, the body was shifted to Kottayam Medical College. While police suspect that the case was one of murder, they are currently awaiting results of a post-mortem examination to know more about the factors and circumstances that led to his death. Asianet reported that given the information available soon after the body’s discovery, the police seemed to think that Mukesh may have died a night before his body was found.
Mukesh had been missing from his house in Kainadi, Kottayam since December 28 and had been seen last on December 27. The Kainadi police had registered a missing person case after his relatives approached them the same day.
