A 34-year-old man of Indian origin has been arrested in Singapore and jailed for a period of six months for taking upskirt videos of 60 women in public places.

The accused, Nantha Kumar Palakrishnan, would put his iPhone 4 on top of some books in his laptop bag with the camera facing up. With the recording mode on, he would then secretly place the unzipped bag on the floor behind the women, reported the Straits Times.

In June 2013, he began shooting such videos after viewing pornographic video clips of a similar nature on the internet. That same year, between the months of July and August, he shot many videos, targeting women at subway stations and popular shopping areas.

However, this didn’t last for very long. The part time tutor was at a shopping mall on August 26, 2014 by the male colleague of one of the women he was targetting. The colleague caught him placing a bag behind her and adjusting it. When the man opened the bag and found the phone, it was in recording mode. A further check on the phone by police revealed that Nantha had stocked similar footage of several women including the victim that day, said the report.

The very next day, the police raided his apartment and sized a laptop that was also full of similar videos. Nantha was charged in a court on Friday with 59 counts of insulting the modesty of the women he had filmed.

The District Judge Adam Nakhoda pointed out that in this case, there were multiple aggrevating factors, including the fact that the accused had committed deeds that involved an amount of planning and premeditation. Thus, he was aware that his actions were wrong, reported PTI
