Vignesh Vellore| The News Minute| June 1, 2014| 9.20 am ISTReal heroes are the ones who act, not the ones who sit back and shower sympathy. This is the reason why we at The News Minute think that Somi Gopalan is a hero! On Friday, Somi saw a photograph someone posted on Facebook which moved him. It was of a puppy hugging the decomposed body of his mother… the photo was posted by someone on Facebook, Somi didn’t just sit back and comment how sad he is, he drove from Indira Nagar to Sarjapur Road in Bangalore to rescue the puppy. Somi, who settled in Bangalore way back in 1994 runs an event management firm. In this mission, Somi did not just rescue the puppy and bury his mother; he also found an abandoned black lab on the way while he was driving down there and rescued him as well. “On the way, I found a black lab standing by the road and eating garbage. It looked like someone had abandoned him. As soon as I stopped my car to make some calls to figure out what to do, this fellow just hops into my car”, Somi says. Somi and his new friend then drove down to Sarjapur to see the puppy. “It was a moving sight; the puppy was still with the mother. She has been dead for a week or so now. The hardest part was that the puppy was so scared that he wouldn’t come close to me. I tried feeding him biscuits but he just wouldn’t. Finally I dug up a pit and placed the mother inside the pit, but the puppy jumped into the pit hugging her. That was such a sad sight”, Somi says. Finally, Somi got both the dogs – the lab and the puppy into the car and drove straight to the “Voice of Stray Dogs”, a dog rescue group. “I knew that they will take care of the dogs well. They normally do not encourage people coming and dropping off dogs like this, but they were happy to take in both of them” he says. Somi adds that this is not the first time he is doing something like this. “I love dogs, and I do what I can to make their life better. I am sad that I couldn’t bring both of them to my home. But we lost our pet for long time, Cocaine, a golden retriever in 2011 and my family is still coping with that. It is hard on us because when something happens to them we have to grapple with it” Somi says. The black lab dog that Somi found on the way has been named Sumo by the folks at “The Voice of Stray Dogs”. Somi is happy that the puppy is now in safe hands.
