The News Minute| May 24, 2014| 11.25 am IST The Kerala police have arrested a man named Sulaiman (48) for selling his two children for a sum of Rs 3.25 lakh. Sulaiman sold his one and a half year old daughter and six month old son through a lawyer based in Mangalore last year. Though Sulaiman and a broker have been arrested, the police are yet to trace the children. Sulaiman who has two wives and twelve children, sold two of the children to two families based in Mangalore. While the daughter was sold for Rs 1.75 lakh, the son was given away for Rs 1.5 lakh. Kanjakad police say the lawyer who acted as the conduit was paid Rs 25,000 for the deal and two other touts Rs 7,500 each. Sulaiman was caught after people in the neighbourhood raised suspicion about the disappearance of the children. Sulaiman has told the police that being a coolie he was unable to take care of his family and resorted to selling his children. This case once again highlights the prevalence of illegal networks that indulge in buying and selling of children to childless couples.
