The Mammootty starrer, The Great Father has turned out to be the biggest hit this year till date. The film, released on March 30th in 202 screens with 958 shows, has crossed the Rs. 50 crore mark and is still marching ahead at the box office. Directed by Haneef Adeni, the film has been produced by Prithviraj Sukumaran, Santosh Sivan, Arya and Shaji Nadesan under the banner August Cinema.

While Mammootty plays the lead role in the film, it also has Arya, Sneha, Anikha, Malavika Mohanan, Miya George, Kalabhavan Shajon, Santhosh Keezhatoor and I.M Vijayan in the star cast.

In the film, Mammootty gets back to his macho image that his fans have been missing for so long. It is touted to be one of the reasons for the film’s success at the box office. According to the trade buzz, The Great Father is the fastest Malayalam film to collect Rs. 20 crores at the box office and the news that it has grossed Rs. 50 crores within a month of its release is a positive sign for the star’s fans.

On the film grossing Rs. 20 crores, Mammootty wrote on his Facebook page a few weeks ago: “I want to thank each and every one of you in making the Great Father such a huge success! It's broken the first day opening collection record, the fastest 20 crores collection to date and all of this with a relatively modest 6 crores budget and made by a first time director. This is a celebration and an eye opener to the size and power of the Malayalam audience like no other ! Here is wishing for our industry to continue growing bigger and better so we can make even better and bolder films!!”

Incidentally, The Great Father happens to be Mammootty’s first Rs. 50 crore film!
