The Madras High Court has sought the translation of verses in the Sodakku song in the Suriya starrer Thaana Serntha Kootam.

It may be recalled that a case was filed by P Sathish Kumar, an AIADMK party worker and secretary of the party’s women’s wing, seeking a ban on the song as it contained the lyrics Adhigara thimira veratty veratty velukka thonuthu.

According to the petitioner, the lines portrayed politicians in a bad light and are defamatory. He added in his petition that the lyrics seem to have been made out with the intention of instigating violence and hence needs to be banned. The petitioner claims that the lines should be removed from the song as it will create law and order problems in the form of protests against politicians. His complaint to the police on the matter allegedly yielded no result forcing him to go to court.

The public interest litigation that he had filed came up for hearing and the judges hearing the case ordered a translated copy of the lyrics to be submitted and posted the hearing to a later date.

The film has collected Rs 90 crore during its 10-day run at the box office worldwide. In Tamil Nadu alone, it has collected Rs 42.3 crore, report sources. While the film had grossed Rs 67.50 crore in India, the overseas collections stood at Rs 22.50 crore.

Directed by Vignesh Shivan of Poda Podee and Naanum Rowdy Thaan fame, the film stars Suriya and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles. Produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under his banner Studio Green, the film was also released in Telugu under the title Gang.

The star cast also includes Karthik, Ramya Krishnan and RJ Balaji in important roles.

Anirudh Ravichander has composed music for this entertainer with Dinesh Krishnan cranking the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing it. Released on January 12 worldwide, Thaana Serntha Kootam is based on the Hindi movie Special 26 by Neeraj Pandey, starring Akshay Kumar and Kajal Agarwal in the lead roles. The film was inspired by a real-life incident that happened in Chennai in the 1980s, when a group of robbers posing as CBI sleuths raided a jewellery showroom and looted the shop in broad daylight.

Well, we need to wait and watch what the court’s verdict on the lyrics is going to be!
