Balaji Mohan’s Maari featured Dhanush in the memorable role of a local ruffian. The film’s sequel, Maari 2, is gearing up for release later this year and it features an ensemble cast of Sai Pallavi, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar, Tovino Thomas and Krishna among others.

On Tuesday, the makers revealed that Maari 2 will hit the screens worldwide on December 21 and the announcement was made via a special poster, which also confirmed that the film’s trailer will be released on Wednesday. The film's first single 'Rowdy Baby' was released recently and it has gone on to be an instant hit.

Maari 2 was supposed to materialize much earlier but due to Dhanush’s multiple commitments, including his directorial project Power Paandi, the project had to be pushed. In the film, Dhanush played a dhoti-clad, mustache-twirling local rowdy and he will return in the same getup for the sequel, which will be bankrolled by Wunderbar Films.

Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas, who has worked in films such as Oru Mexican Aparatha and Godha and recently in Dhanush’s first Malayalam production Tharanga, has been roped in to play the baddie in Maari 2, which will be dubbed and released in Telugu simultaneously.

It’s worth mentioning that Maari 2 was expected to be released alongside Viswasam for Pongal 2019. In a surprise move to advance its release, the film will now slug it out with Vijay Sethupathi’s Seethakathi, Jayam Ravi’s Adanga Maru and Vishnu Vishal’s Silukkuvarupatti Singam at the box-office on December 21.

Meanwhile, Dhanush is currently shooting for his next project with Vetrimaaran and it’s based on Tamil novel 'Vekkai'. Dhanush also awaits the release of Enai Nokki Paayum Thota, which marks his first-time collaboration with Gautham Vasudev Menon.
