Lyca bags TN theatrical rights of ‘Spyder’ for a whopping price

The industry grapevine is that Lyca bagged the rights for a whopping Rs. 25 crore.

The much-awaited Mahesh Babu starrer Spyder, a Tamil-Telugu bilingual, is scheduled to hit the screens on September 27. The makers on Monday confirmed that Lyca Productions, the makers behind films such as Rajinikanth’s 2.0 and Kamal Haasan’s currently stalled Sabash Naidu, have acquired the Tamil Nadu theatrical rights of the film. The industry grapevine is that Lyca bagged the rights for a whopping Rs. 25 crore, making it the highest buy for a Mahesh Babu film in the state. All his earlier films which were dubbed and released in Tamil Nadu were sold for as low as Rs. 2 crore.

The film is being directed by AR Murugadoss, and his association with the project has definitely helped the makers fetch a very high price in Tamil Nadu. In the film, Mahesh plays an intelligence bureau officer and it is said that he performed most of the stunts sans a body double, leaving everybody on the sets stunned with his commitment. 

Made on a budget of over Rs 100 crore, the film also features Rakul Preet Singh, Bharath, RJ Balaji, Priyadarshi and SJ Suryah in important roles. Harris Jayaraj is composing the music. Spyder marks the first-time collaboration of Murugadoss and Mahesh Babu, and the film will have a simultaneous release in Hindi and Malayalam as well.

Tipped to be high on never before seen kind of action, the film’s second teaser is being planned to be released on August 9, to coincide with Mahesh Babu’s birthday. Reliance Entertainment is said to have bagged the Hindi rights of the film.
