An Assistant Sub-Inspector of police in Karnataka has been suspended after a complaint was filed against him stating that he allegedly raped a mentally challenged woman on Saturday night in Tumakuru.

The 31-year-old survivior’s mother lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday, stating that ASI Umesh, who is attached to the Tumakuru Rural Police Station had raped her daughter in a moving vehicle, a report by Deccan Herald says.

ASI Umesh was questioned by Tumakuru SP Isha Pant and later suspended. While there was speculation on whether the incident occurred in a police jeep, the SP said that it happened in a private vehicle.

Details on who was driving the vehicle, remain unknown, the DH report states.

ASI Umesh was patrolling the streets a night when he spotted the survivor at a bridge near the Antharasanahalli bypass. Umesh questioned her on why she was standing alone and offered her a ride home. After she got into the vehicle, Umesh allegedly tried to rape her, the report adds.

The survivor pleaded with Umesh to let her go and shouted for help. Umesh then allegedly gagged her and raped her twice, the survivor’s brother told mediapersons.

The ASI then took the survivor’s brother’s phone number and called him twice, stating that his sister had wandered off and asked him to pick her up. The brother told Umesh that he was unwell and hence would not be able to come. To this, Umesh said he would drop her off at home, the brother added.

After Umesh dropped the survivor to her house in a police jeep, she began abusing him. Her mother questioned her on the reason for her anger, and it was then that the survivor narrated the incident, the DH report adds.

The Tumakuru police have registered a case and the survivor has been sent for a medical examination, the report says.
