It was a ‘Kracker’ of a Diwali this year as Dhanush’s Kodi and Karthi’s Kaashmora slugged it out at the box-office.

While both the films opened to mixed reviews and reactions from audiences and critics alike, it didn’t stop them from making an impact at the ticket window. Interestingly, both the films fought a close battle and emerged successful in the opening weekend and have reportedly grossed over Rs. 20 crore worldwide. While Kaashmora earned much more thanks to its simultaneous release in Telugu, both the films gave each other tough competition at the Tamil Nadu box-office.

Kodi has been tipped as a great comeback for Dhanush, especially after the failures of Maari and Thanga Magan, and the film has been lapped up by the masses. Trisha’s negative role in particular has given audiences hope that Tamil cinema heroines can go beyond just looking pretty on screen. The critics raved about Trisha and heaped praise on Dhanush too, for agreeing to be superseded by a woman in the film, which has been directed by RS Durai Senthil Kumar.

Kaashmora, on the other hand, has been lapped up for its overall entertainment. Karthi as a quack exorcist leaves audiences in splits throughout the first half and he’s aptly supported by Vivekh, who plays his father. The much-hyped period portion, which features Karthi in the menacing role of Raj Nayak, doesn’t quite work as one might have expected.
