Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said he was misquoted on his comment on beef ban. "I only said that India is a secular country and food habits cannot be stopped but the Hindu faiths and sentiments must be respected in Hindu majority states in the same way as the other communities have rights in their own dominant states," an IBN report quotes him as saying. Less than a week after Minister of State (MoS) for Minority Affairs Mukthtar Abbas Naqvi said that those who wished to eat beef should go to Pakistan, Rijiju had reportedly responded sharply saying that the minister’s statement was uncalled-for.According to a report in The Indian Express, Rijiju said that this was a democracy and that “sometimes, some statements are made which are not palatable.”“I eat beef, I’m from Arunachal Pradesh, can somebody stop me? So let us not be touchy about somebody’s practices,” Rijiju was quoted as saying on a visit to Aizawl on Tuesday.The minister went on to say that every place had its own sentiment questioned that if a Mizo Christian called their land that of Jesus, “why should someone have a problem in Punjab or Haryana?”The report mentions that the minister said that if a Gujarat and a Madhya Pradesh is a majority Hindu population, laws will be made which are conducive to the people from there.“So they also should not have a problem with the way we live, and we also should not have a problem with the way they live,” he added.The member of Parliament from Arunachal (West) also spoke on the issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh to the north-eastern states.“It’s an issue for us and we are giving a lot of emphasis to deal with that,” he said.Also Read: Why does the right-wing love Pakistan so much?
