In a tragic incident in Kerala’s Kollam district, a police officer was mowed down by a truck while he was on duty trying to help the victims of a road mishap.  

The incident occurred at Kulakkada on the MC Road near Kottarakkara on Sunday morning around 5:30 am.

The deceased, who has been identified as 34-year-old Vipin Kumar, was the driver of highway patrol vehicle. 

Vipin was accompanied by two other officers, Venugopal (54) and Ashokan (51), who were also seriously injured.

The police patrol team, including Vipin, was trying to rescue the passengers of a car, all mimicry artistes, who had met with an accident at Kulakkada at the time of the incident. 

The car had rammed into an electric post and the officials had rushed to the spot for rescue operations.

The passengers in the car suffered minor injuries and were shifted to a hospital by the police officials. 

Following this, the team was preparing the records for the accident when a speeding lorry crushed them.

The truck driver fled the scene soon after the incident, but was nabbed later by the police. 

He was identified as Suresh Kumar, a native of Malampuzha. 

Meanwhile, residents at the scene swung into action and rushed the police officials to hospital. 

However, Vipin was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. 

Vipin is survived by his wife, Anju, and three-year-old son, Karthik. 

The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem at Thiruvananthapuram MCH. 

The body was later kept for at the Armed Reserve Police camp at Kollam and at the Kottarakkara DSP office complex for his colleagues to pay their last respects. 

Reacting to the incident, CM Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. 

He also promised the family all support from the government. 

DGP Loknath Behera also expressed grief over the incident and promised all help to the injured police officers and their families
