The Kerala police have arrested a 50-year-old man in Kollam for allegedly killing his mother and burying her body beside their house. Police have retrieved the one-month-old cadaver of 70-year-old Savithriamma from the backyard of the house. The accused, Sunil, a resident of Chemmamukku, was arrested by Kollam East police on Saturday night.

Police started investigation into the case when her daughter, who is living in another house, gave a complaint to police that Savithriamma is missing. She had been missing from the house since September 3. The daughter had stated to the police that Sunil used to have constant fights with his mother.

According to police officials, Sunil had initially told them that Savithriamma might have gone to some temples. “He told us that she used to visit temples and stay there for a couple of days,” said an official of Kollam East police. But on further investigation, police found contradictions in some of the statements Sunil gave.

As per the police officials, Sunil killed Savithriamma over arguments over property which was in her name. He is being booked under section 302 (Punishment for murder) of Indian Penal Code.

Kuttan, Sunil’s friend who is an accused in the case for helping him to bury Savithriamma’s body, is absconding.

According to police, Sunil is a prime accused in another murder case which happened before five years. “This also happened when he was in some heated argument with another man. The trial in that case has not yet started and he was out on bail,” the police official told TNM.

The body of Savithriamma, which was retrieved on Saturday, was taken for post-mortem on Sunday. “We are awaiting the results for post-mortem to find out exactly how the lady was killed,” said the official.
