The suicide attempt of a 51-year-old woman from Kerala’s Balaramapuram has revealed a shocking case of sexual harassment, allegedly by a sitting MLA.

M Vincent, the Congress legislator representing Kovalam constituency in Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly stalked the woman and harassed her over phone for several months.

“In the statement given by her husband, it is said that the MLA used to call the woman over phone. Her husband had even warned him once. He had also gone to the MLA’s house and told his wife about this. But still, the MLA continued to call her,” the police told TNM.

Upset and frustrated, the woman allegedly attempted suicide by overdosing on pills.

The police have charged M Vincent for abetment to suicide.

“The case was registered under Section 306 of the IPC for abetment of suicide. We haven’t yet summoned the accused or questioned him. That is the next step of the investigation. The case has been charged on the basis of the statement given by her husband,” Harikumar B, DySP Neyyatinkara, told TNM.

The woman has been admitted at the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital in Neyyatinkara, the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram. The police added that the statement of the woman has not been taken yet as her condition is not stable.

“Her condition continues to be critical,” said Harikumar. According to reports, a huge crowd was gathered outside the hospital. Police personnel have been deployed at the spot.

Congress leaders, meanwhile, were unavailable to comment.
