A nine-year-old girl from Kerala died on Thursday after an iron rod from an under-construction building fell on her head at Attari checkpost in Amritsar.

The Times of India reports that the girl, identified as Nanda and a native of Vadakara, was visiting the India-Pak border to watch the ‘Beating the Retreat’ Ceremony with her family.

According to Manoramaonline, the incident occurred near the Swarn Jayanti Gate, when a nearby building was being demolished. An electric cable was stuck in the machine, which is reported to have brought down the iron pillar.

An hour before the ceremony, the iron rod fell and hit the girl, who was at the visitor's gallery, on her head.

“She was immediately provided medical assistance. But we could not save her life,“ Border Security Force deputy inspector general R S Kataria told TOI.

Two vendors standing nearby reportedly sustained minor injuries in the incident.
