As the unprecedented rains in Kerala rage on with heavy rainfall expected over the next 48 hours, Southern Railways has effected changes to the regular train schedule on account of flooding on railway tracks, bridges and stations.

In a statement to the press, the Southern Railway said, “As a result of unprecedented heavy rains, landslides, opening of Dams over Kerala region, there is heavy flow of water at various places. Railway Officials are deployed round the clock at all sections to monitor the impact of flood on Railway tracks, bridges and railway premises.”

“Railway officials are also closely monitoring the situation from Divisional and Headquarters control offices. Considering the safety of passengers on board, many trains are regulated at different stations. Speed restriction imposed in various sensitive locations where trains are running at speeds between 10 kmph to 45 kmph,” the statement added.

“Every effort is being made to identify the obstructions from time to time. Keeping in view the dependency of people on rail transportation, trains are operated so far with speed restrictions of lesser permissible speed barring a few sections where it is inevitable to run trains only on single line,” the railways said.
