No matter how many times educationists and psychologists caution parents not to pressure their children about exam results, the horror stories never stop. In the latest instance, a 40-year-old man from Kerala brutally attacked his son after the Class 10 SSCLC Board Exam results were announced. His son had scored A+ in all subjects except one, and this angered his father so much that he beat the boy with a shovel.

The boy from Kilimanoor in Thiruvananthapuram, secured A+ plus in 6 out 7 subjects. According to the Kilimanoor police, the boy was injured in his arms and legs after the accused, identified as Sabu, assaulted him with a shovel. Sabu allegedly attempted to choke the boy by pressing the edge of the shovel against his throat, reports stated.

The assault came to the attention of the neighbours who restrained Sabu, after the victim’s sister cried out loud after witnessing the incident. A case was registered based on a complaint by the boy’s mother, who was not present when the attack took place.

“We have registered a case under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons) and section 75 (punishment for cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice Act,” Circle Inspector Mohammad Shafi of the Kilimanoor police station told TNM.

Following the complaint, the police investigated the case and arrested the accused.

Meanwhile, the boy, who sustained injuries on arms and legs was treated at a neighbouring hospital.

“He did not have to be admitted to the hospital, but he did receive treatment for the injuries sustained,” SI Shafi added.

The results of SSLC exams for 2018-19 were announced in Kerala on Monday, May 6. The state secured a pass percentage of 98.11%. Over 4,30,000 students wrote the exam in 2,939 centres across Kerala, Lakshadweep and the Gulf.
